The above mentioned plugins are broken crap and should be avoided. Nobody has volunteered to re-write those plugins, so any improvement in this situation seems quite unlikely. Okay, sure, some MIPS machines aren't the fastest boxes on the block these days. However, despite the age of some of these beasts, they still can make very functional, useful machines. A Cobalt Qube 2 could make a very nice broadband Internet router, capable of hosting websites, email, IRC and numerous other tasks. There are a number of reasons why you'd want to install Linux on this sort of hardware. Status Symbol: Linux on x86 is so common these days it's not funny.

Gentoo uses a BSD ports-like system called Portage. Portage is a package management system that allows great flexibility while installing and maintaining software on a Gentoo system. It provides compile-time option support (through USE flags), conditional dependencies, pre-package installation summary, safe installation (through sandboxing) and uninstallation of software, system profiles, configuration file protection amongst several other features.

In fact, there is no difference between the various releases after they have been installed. Gentoo 1.4 and later are glibc-2.3.x based. As such, running emerge --sync && emerge -uDN world will bring your entire system up to speed with the "latest Gentoo". No. The installer will only do what is covered in the install guide. The only thing that may be configured for you is xorg. When the LiveCD boots into X, a xorg.conf is automatically generated. If you choose xorg-x11 (or anything that depends on it) as an extra package to install, the /etc/X11/xorg.conf from the LiveCD will be automatically copied into your new install.
