Based on the limited number of cases studied so far, it is not yet possible to determine what percentage of WNV infections during pregnancy result in infection of the fetus or medical problems in newborns.

Most people infected with WNV have no symptoms whatsoever. About 20% of infected develop West Nile fever including mild symptoms of fever, headache, and body aches, occasionally with a skin rash on the trunk of the body and swollen lymph glands lasting a few days. About 1 in 150 persons infected with WNV develop a more severe form of disease resulting in encephalitis, meningitis, or meningoencephalitis, requiring hospitalization.

The virus crosses the blood-brain barrier where it interferes with normal central nervous system functions and causes inflammation (swelling) of brain tissue.

Always consult with your physician before you take any medication you are not sure of. For a simple cold you may take benadryl or sudafed for stuffiness, tylenol for headache or fever, Robitussin for cough. Of course you should rest and take plenty of clear fluids. You may take Immodium for diarrhea and Emetrol for nausea. These are all over the counter medications and are safe in pregnancy. Use them as the labeled directions state.

One of the most common questions I receive from women with cervical dysplasia is how having a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) may affect their ability to get pregnant and sustain a pregnancy. LEEP is a method frequently used to treat high grade cervical dysplasia. Uncommonly, a LEEP may also be used to treat very early stage cervical cancer and may be used to diagnose the disease.

All residents of areas where active viral transmission has been identified are at increased risk of getting WNV infection, but persons older than 50 years of age have a higher risk of developing severe illness such as encephalitis.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has followed a number of women who became ill with WNV during pregnancy. Under situations of sickness, such as frequent miscarriage or whatever, the appropriate diet for the mother has worked wonderfully. We have had many patients as mothers who have followed the diet with great success. To my knowledge, the diet has resulted in no problems or reactions in these situations. Of course, everyone is different, and you might want to bring the diet to your obstetrician's attention if there are any other health problems.

There is some debate about the effects of antibodies on pregnancy rates after vasectomy reversal. Approximately 70 to 80 percent of men who have had vasectomies will have antibodies to their sperm. However, these antibodies rarely prevent the sperm from fertilizing the egg. Therefore, we counsel patients that it is unnecessary to routinely test for antibodies, as they rarely will have a bad effect upon the success rate.

West Nile Virus is a virus that was first identified in Uganda in 1937. This virus was first identified in the United States in 1999 during an outbreak in New York. Since that time, the virus has been found in mosquitoes, birds, horses, and humans in various locations in the United States.

There is a consensus that at a platelet count of 50,000 ppm or greater both mother and fetus are safe. Most physicians will not treat ITP during pregnancy if the platelet count remains at or above this level. In fact many physicians consider a platelet count above 20,000 ppm safe during pregnancy, but most want it above 50,000 ppm near term and between 80,000 ppm and 100,000 ppm for an epidural anesthesia.

The sex of the fetus can usually be determined at the time of the fetal survey which is usually scheduled between the 18th and 20th week of the pregnancy. The risk of HIV exposure during competitive sports is proportional to the risk of direct blood to blood contact. The risk of blood to blood contact during school supervised play is very minimal since this would require that two players with uncovered wounds come in direct contact with each other.

Any sexually active woman of childbearing age has a risk of an ectopic pregnancy. However, ectopic pregnancies are more likely if you have had: Daughter or Granddaughter of women who were treated with a drug in the 50s, 60s and 70s called DES (diethylstilboestrol) for miscarriage. are all at an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy but in some cases more research needs to be undertaken to establish these risks.

There has been one case of mother-to-child transmission of WNV in the United States, but more information is needed in order to understand the risks with pregnancy. Pregnant women should take the proper steps to avoid infection by wearing protective clothing and using repellents containing DEET. When WNV activity is in an area, pregnant women who become sick should see their doctor.

A. There are no human vaccines to prevent WNV infection at this time, but several companies are working towards developing a vaccine. Avoid spending time outside when mosquitoes are most active, from dusk until dawn. Wear loose fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors. Mosquitoes can bite through thin clothing tight fitting clothing. Treat clothing with repellents containing permethrin or DEET.

People who have close contact with a human or non-human primate infected with the virus are at risk. Such persons include laboratory or quarantine facility workers who handle non-human primates that have been associated with the disease. In addition, hospital staff and family members who care for patients with the disease are at risk if they do not use proper barrier nursing techniques.

A relatively small number of WNV infected dogs (<40) and only 1 WNV infected cat have been reported to CDC during 2003. Experimentally infected dogs* showed no symptoms after infection with WNV. Some infected cats exhibited mild, nonspecific symptoms during the first week after infection--for the most part only showing a slight fever and slight lethargy. It is unlikely that you would notice any unusual symptoms or behavior in your cat or dog that become infected with WNV.

Prior history of an ectopic pregnancy (Greatest risk,15% after the first ectopic pregnancy, and 30% after the second.) Infection in the pelvis is another leading cause of ectopic pregnancy. Pelvic infections are usually caused by .ually transmitted organisms, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea. However, non-.ually transmitted bacteria can also cause pelvic infection and increase the risk of an ectopic pregnancy. Infection causes an ectopic pregnancy by damaging or obstructing the fallopian tubes.

People are infected with WNv by being bitten by an infected mosquito. The risk level in the province is expected to vary by region and to flare up in the summer and fall depending on climate conditions. The public will be notified by public health officials if birds or mosquitoes in the province test positive for the virus. When people are exposed to mosquitoes in an area the WN virus has been detected they are at risk for infection.
