A baby with this condition will usually also have all, or some, of these other associated abnormalities: Epispadias: In boys, the urethra (the tube through which urine is funneled out of the body from the bladder) has not formed completely, and it may be extremely short and split. Because of this, it opens on the upper surface rather than on the end of the penis. The split may be small or involve the entire length of the penis.

The word Exstrophy is derived from the Greek word ekstriphein, which literally means to "turn inside out." Bladder exstrophy is a malformation of the bladder, in which the bladder and related structures are turned inside out. The skin of the lower abdominal wall that normally covers the bladder also does not form properly and is separated, thus exposing the inside of the bladder to the external world.

Medical science has no explanation for why an embryo may develop bladder exstrophy. It is not because of anything the mother or father did or did not do during the pregnancy. On the other hand, it is not simply an inherited condition.

Although bladder exstrophy occurs in only 1:30,000 births in the general population, it may be more likely to recur in a family. Based on some studies, there may be a 1:100 chance of it among siblings and a 1:70 chance of it among offspring of a person with bladder exstrophy. Exstrophy of the bladder also occurs 2-3 times more frequently in males than in females. Cloacal exstrophy: The incidence of cloacal exstrophy is 1:200,000 and is much less common in females.

Classic bladder exstrophy is an abnormality of the lower part of the tummy where the bladder, the urethra (the tube that takes urine to the outside of the body), the pelvis and the genitalia are affected. The bladder is seen on the outside of the baby’s tummy, the urethra is open along the top side and not formed into a cylindrical shape as it should be, and the tummy button is in a lower position. The pelvic bones do not come together completely at the front (this is known as diastasis).

The condition of exstrophy occurs during the development of the embryo (the name given to the baby during this stage) very early in the pregnancy, about 4 to 5 weeks after conception. The cause and nature of the faulty development is not exactly certain. It is 4 to 5 weeks after conception that the various organs and different types of muscles and tissues of the body begin to form from layers of cells that separate, divide and fold.

Arachnoiditis in the lumbosacral region of the spinal canal can affect the autonomic nerve supply to the bladder and bowel, leading to dysfunction. Bladder: either decreased activity with difficulty passing urine and inability to completely empty the bladder, or increased activity resulting in urgency or incontinence.

Heart valve abnormalities that have appeared in some diet drug users occur in the two valves located on the left side of the heart. These valves are known as the aortic valve and the mitral valve. In some diet drug users, one or both of the valves developed lesions that prevent the valves from closing properly. This allows the blood to flow backwards, creating a condition known as "regurgitation"

A neurogenic bladder is one that is affected through the spinal nerves lacking sufficient inhibition from higher control centers in the brain and/or brainstem region. This can cause excessive spasticity flowing to the bladder creating small volumes and higher pressures with urgent and frequent voiding and subsequent incontinence. Frequently adults and children will be voiding every one to two hours with very little time to make it to the bathroom and frequent wetness with transfers.

Bladder cancer begins in the bladder, the organ that stores urine. The wall of the bladder has several layers, and cancer may appear on the surface layer, penetrate into the muscle layers, or even invade the surrounding organs. Over 90% of bladder cancers are Transitional Cell Carcinomas (TCC), so called because these cells have the capability to undergo changes in size from cubical (when the bladder is empty) to flat (when the bladder is full).

Bladder cancer is the most common tumor of the urinary system and the fifth most common cancer in the USA. It is estimated that 67,160 new cases of bladder cancer will be diagnosed in 2007, and that 13,750 individuals will die from it. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there are 330,000 new cases annually worldwide. Bladder cancer prevalence is steadily increasing and its projected rise is 28% by 2010 for both men and women.

Many early stage bladder cancer patients do not show any symptoms. The most common clinical presentation is blood in the urine or hematuria. Usually this is painless and the blood may be visible to the naked eye (gross hematuria) or can be seen only under the microscope (microscopic hematuria).

If there is reason to suspect that a patient might have bladder cancer, a doctor will use one or more of the following methods to make a diagnosis: Urinalysis/Cytology: Urinalysis can detect blood that raises suspicion of bladder cancer. Cytologic examination of urine cells can be of more help as a diagnostic tool. However, many bladder tumors are not detected by this exam. ImmunoCyt™/uCyt+™: This novel test uses a urine sample that contains cells from the bladder walls.

Stage refers to how far a cancer has progressed anatomically, while the grade refers to the aggressiveness of the cancer and is defined by cell appearance (differentiation) and the make-up of their nucleus. Stage is determined by the depth to which the tumor has penetrated the bladder wall, and assessment of the invasion of lymph nodes and other surrounding organs or tissues.

Follow-up care: An important part of any treatment plan is a schedule of follow-up exams. Exams that could include urinary cytology, ImmunoCyt™/uCyt+™, and cystoscopy among others are necessary to see if cancer has come back, or if there is a new cancer.

Fish floats upside-down or sideways. This is particularly common in fancy goldfish because of their bizarre body shapes. Dry food eaten quickly swells up in the fish's intestine and keeps the fish from controlling its swim bladder properly. To help, feed the fish pre-soaked or gel-based foods. Green foods are also helpful; peas in particular. with finrot, these disorders can also be caused by bacterial infection. Treatment is much the same.

Although the incidence of bladder cancer is low, there has been a significant increase in the disease over the last ten years.
