FAQNo. You can take a full Moped test, by first passing the theory and then the moped practical test. You would then be entitled to ride without L plates, and carry a passenger, but you would still be limited to 50cc and 31mph. In most cases, no. Normally a full car licence would already have provisional motorcycle entitlement, shown as Category A in the green section of an old style paper licence, or on the counterpart of a photocard licence.

If you passed your test after this date you would need to apply to the DVLA for a provisional bike license and complete a CBT. To ride anything up to a 125cc bike you need at least to have a valid CBT certificate (these only last for 2 years).

The CBT will last two years, you must display L plates, can't go on motorways and can't carry passengers. For a category P machine (up to 50cc legally defined as a moped) if you passed your car test before Feb 2001, the DVLA will also have given you a full P entitlement.
