We suggest allowing the wood to weather naturally for at least 3 to 6 months before considering paint or stain.

Typically, all wood fence should not be stained or painted until a minimum of 60 days after installation. We recommend you check with your local paint store for the proper method of application.

Even though the lumber may be kiln-dried before treatment, using water-borne preservatives restores moisture to the wood. Too much moisture in the wood may prevent the stain or paint from penetrating the wood sufficiently. It is best to test the wood by painting or staining a scrap piece to see if it applies properly. If not, wait until it does. A water repellent should be applied annually. Do not use latex paints. Semi-transparent, oil-based stains work best.

We recommend applying a protective finish to the fence once it is installed. This helps minimize the effects of weathering and maximize the life span of your fence.

We recommend that your siding have a moisture content of 15% or below prior to staining. Since many homeowners do not have access to a moisture meter it is a good recommendation to wait 3-5 days after a heavy rain to allow the exterior and interior moisture content of the wood to lower. After the home has been thoroughly cleaned using Cabot Problem-Solver Wood Cleaner and the coating is in good sound condition, we recommend using Problem-Solver Oil Primer.

The available historical evidence shows that Eichler used stains, not paint, on his homes, inside and out. Jennings joinery prefers to paint or stain prior to glazing and assembly to properly seal the product. Also when using 6.38 Laminated glass (which is thicker than normal glass), if the inside rebate is not painted or stained prior to glazing then after the product is glazed the unsealed surface behind the glass edge is visible and un protected. This is not recommended. Cedar shakes can create an uneven surface making it difficult to properly apply the insulated siding. Also nails do not hold well in old cedar shakes. We recommend shakes be removed.

While drying times can vary based on factors such as humidity, plan on waiting about four hours when you are using latex paint. If you are using oil-based paint, you will probably need to wait up to 24 hours.

If you plan on painting the room we suggest doing this prior to the new floor being installed. Old carpet, vinyl, etc make for a great drop rag. If you plan on wallpapering, we suggest this project be completed after the new floor is installed. Some flooring products have stiff backs and can damage wallpaper and painted walls quite easily. Touching up a painted area requires minimal work. Touching up a wallpapered area can be a daunting task.

The staining of visible fence surfaces is mandatory in The Meadows, Filing #8. Homeowners residing in the other sub-divisions are encouraged to stain their fences using the approved products. The Architectural Control Committee (ACC) does review the condition of private fences on an annual basis. The fence was installed circa 1870. The fence posts, which at one time had cannon balls on their tops, were changed out in the 1920s.

Jerith Aluminum Fences are installed by setting a post in concrete and sliding the horizontal rails of a section into the pre-punched holes in the post. A second post is then set at the other end of the section. A second section slides into the second post, and so on. Quite frankly, we don't know and don't care. Both are effective. It really depends on what type of look you are trying to get from you shed. Plus, we are carpenters, not painters. Call a painter to get his opinion on which are better.

We recommend painting or staining after assembly. The rungs of the ladders sometimes are a tight fit and the finish may get marked up during assembly. Also, the wood glue used in the notched legs adheres better to unfinished wood. It is also much easier to paint or stain it when it is set up as opposed to all the individual pieces on the floor. If you paint it, we recommend you put a good primer coat, and two finish coats of a durable enamel paint.
